Pop-up Windows
Pop-up Windows are small browser windows that typically do not have buttons
or menus and which contain a brief message or image. These windows are
used for one-time displays of information. The visitor will only be able
to see what is displayed and they will only be able to close the window.*
Usually, a Pop-up Window will be used to display a brief message (ex., as the
answer to a question), a brief announcement (ex., new store hours), or a teaser
advertisement for a new product or service. Pop-up Windows are generally
small in size (150 x 150 pixels) and do not change the web page that the visitor
was originally looking at.
Pop-up Windows may appear in response to a visitor clicking on something or
you may have them appear automatically when a web page is entered/exited.
Pop-up Windows are meant to be "disposable" not "useable". In other words,
their intended purpose is as a quick piece of information that can be closed (or
discarded) when the message has been read by the visitor.
NOTES:
- Pop-up Windows are usually temporary and are either removed after a while
or replaced with newer information.
- Pop-up Windows can be sized based on their content. Scrollable
Pop-up Windows should be avoided if possible.
- Pop-up Windows require a web browser that has scripting enabled. If
a visitor has disabled scripting in their web browser, some types of Pop-up
Windows will not work for them.
- Pop-up Windows should be used sparingly since many visitors consider
them to be annoying when used to excess.
A word about Pop-Up Consoles
Pop-up Consoles are Pop-up windows that contain hyperlinks to other locations
and which are not meant to be closed until the visitor decides to exit the
website completely.
*It is possible to leave selected menu items and buttons visible and
functional in a Pop-up Window web browser window, but this is uncommon and there
is usually a better method of handling the situation.
